The Gallery - A little story about Red Dot Radio

Delivery of the Porta-Cabins

The new studios are now located in two porta-cabins (VERY generously donated!!!) in the car park of the Royal Victoria Hospital.

To get the porta-cabins in place required a VERY big green crane (it had to be green for safety reasons).

(Click a picture to see a bigger version. Select 'Back' after viewing the picture.)

The crane was too big for the slope so the cabins had to be loaded from the car-park.

The first cabin is about to be unloaded.

The cabins had to be delivered on big lorries. Here is one coming the wrong way around the road system.

The crane gets into position using all it's steering wheels.

The crane driver shows the forman how the crane works.

The crane driver prepares the crane stabilizers for the lift.

Because of the slope of the car-park, the crane had to use it's maximum extension for the stablizers. The crane driver provides a good scale of reference.

Everything is in place here and a fitter checks that the door works.

The first cabin gets lifted off the lorry.

The connecting corridor is lifted off another lorry.

The lorry pulls away and two men stand under the cabin. They are not there to catch it!

A 'camp' forman gives directions as the second cabin is lowered into position.

Two men pull the cabin into place. We are not sure why they are wearing safety hurnesses?

Two fitters fit the middle connecting section. This is a tricky task that can only be tackled by someone smoking a cigarette.

The second cabin goes into place. This is tricky because the crane driver can see a thing from his position.

The second lorry moves into position, just missing the person taking the pictures.

Two men prepare the second cabin before it is lowered into position. A very nice use of day-glow vests.

Crane and cabins.

The second cabin is lifted off the lorry. We do not know where the third, smaller one went but we don't have it.

The site before and studio was delivered. Note the safety cones preventing any access to the area.

Here you see the site before any cabins were positioned.

The crane driver shows off by doing hand-brake turns in the car-park.

Because the lorries were so big they had to go the wrong way around the access roads. The man looking in his car was in for a surprise.
